Relocation Nigeria guide

Immigrate to France from Nigeria

How Nigerian applicants can choose a French long-stay route, use France-Visas and complete the correct post-arrival procedure.

Important: This guide is general information, not legal advice or a guarantee of approval. Your nationality, residence history, family circumstances and chosen route may change the requirements.

France does not use one generic immigration visa. The long-stay category must match the purpose: salaried work, a Talent route, study, family, business or another recognised basis. The visa wording also determines what happens after arrival–online validation for some holders, a residence-card application for others.

Start with purpose and duration

A short-stay Schengen visa normally covers visits within the applicable limit. It is not the ordinary route for relocating, taking ongoing employment or beginning a long academic programme. For a stay longer than 90 days, the applicant generally needs the appropriate French long-stay visa unless an exemption applies.

Use the France-Visas assistant with your nationality, country of residence, destination, duration and purpose. Save the generated category and checklist. If the real purpose changes before submission, run it again rather than editing the story around documents already collected.

Work and Talent routes begin with the role

For ordinary salaried work, the employer may need a work authorisation before the visa application. The job, contract and labour-market process determine the route. A candidate should not pay an unauthorised intermediary to obtain an employer approval.

The multi-year Talent framework covers defined professional and personal profiles, such as certain highly qualified employees, researchers, innovative projects, business activity, investors and recognised artistic or international profiles. Each subcategory has its own legal conditions. Being talented in the everyday sense is not the eligibility test.

EU Blue Card applicants must satisfy the current qualification, contract and remuneration rules. Because thresholds change, verify them through France-Visas or the official French administration portal when the application is prepared.

Study involves both academic and consular stages

Nigerian applicants may need to follow the Études en France procedure through Campus France in addition to the visa application. Confirm whether the chosen institution and programme participate, which academic interview or document-verification steps apply, and when the France-Visas stage begins.

Budget for tuition, student contribution where applicable, housing, insurance, travel and the official proof-of-resources requirement. Limited student work should not be presented as the sole means of funding the first year.

After graduation, some students may qualify for a job-search, business-creation or change-of-status route. This depends on the qualification and current law; it should be researched before choosing the course, not assumed after graduation.

Family pathways depend on whose family you join

Joining a French citizen, an EU citizen, a refugee or a non-EU resident can involve different procedures. A non-EU sponsor may first need to satisfy a family-reunification process in France. Spouses of French citizens use a different framework and still need complete civil and relationship evidence.

Where Nigerian records contain spelling, date or place inconsistencies, resolve them through lawful civil-registration procedures. A translation cannot change the underlying record.

Use France-Visas as the source of the file

France-Visas identifies the visa type, documents and local submission path. The Nigeria page explains the current application-centre arrangements. Complete the official form first, then use only the appointment link identified by the French authorities.

A well-organised file normally contains:

  • the application and receipt generated by the official system;
  • passport and travel-history evidence;
  • the route anchor, such as work authorisation, admission or family document;
  • resources, accommodation and insurance evidence requested for that category;
  • civil records and compliant translations;
  • a short explanation where the official facts need context.

After arrival: validation is route-specific

Some long-stay visas function as a residence permit after online validation and payment of the required tax within the official period. Other visas require the holder to apply for a residence card at the competent prefecture. Follow the wording on the visa and decision–not another applicant’s category.

Keep proof of validation, address, work or study activity and travel. Begin renewal preparation early, particularly where a prefecture appointment or online portal is involved. Changes of employer, course or family situation may require prior action.

Reduce refusal risk without overloading the file

More pages do not automatically make stronger evidence. A French visa officer needs a coherent route, reliable documents and answers to the category’s questions. Build a short index showing the purpose, anchor document and supporting evidence. Use a dated explanation only for facts that genuinely require context, such as a name correction, unusual funding source or gap in study.

Check that bank activity supports the stated income, accommodation covers the relevant period and the academic or professional timeline agrees across the form and CV. If a sponsor pays costs, show both the relationship and the sponsor’s ability to make the commitment. Avoid speculative flight purchases unless the official instructions require them.

If refused, read the stated reasons and appeal information before submitting the same file again. A fresh application without addressing the deciding issue can repeat the outcome. Appeal bodies and deadlines depend on the visa and decision, so obtain current official or professional guidance promptly.

Immigrating to France from Nigeria FAQ

Do I apply through Campus France or France-Visas?

A student may need both processes. Campus France handles applicable academic procedure, while France-Visas governs the visa application. Follow the sequence published for Nigeria.

Can I work in France with a visitor long-stay visa?

A visitor status is generally designed for residence without employment. Use a work-authorising category if employment is the real purpose.

What is a VLS-TS?

It is a long-stay visa that also serves as a residence permit after the required online validation. Not every long-stay visa is a VLS-TS.

Does every French work visa require employer authorisation?

No single answer covers all Talent and employment categories. Ordinary salaried routes commonly involve work authorisation, while defined Talent categories use their own evidence.

Can a French residence permit be used to move permanently to another EU country?

Not automatically. It can support limited travel, but residence in another country normally requires that country’s permission.

Should supporting documents be translated into French?

Use the requirements generated for the category. Foreign civil or official records may require a qualified translation and authentication or legalisation as instructed.
