Immigrate to Ireland from Nigeria

A practical guide to Irish employment permits, study, family permission and residence planning for Nigerian applicants.

Important: This guide is general information, not legal advice or a guarantee of approval. Your nationality, residence history, family circumstances and chosen route may change the requirements.

Ireland is an EU Member State, but it is not part of the Schengen Area and does not participate in the EU Blue Card system. Its employment permits, entry visas and immigration permissions are Irish national processes. That distinction affects both the application sequence and what an Irish permission allows outside Ireland.

For many Nigerian applicants, the hardest part is understanding that a job offer, an employment permit, a long-stay visa and post-arrival registration can be separate steps.

Understand the two-authority system

The Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment administers employment permits. Immigration Service Delivery handles visas, immigration permissions and many residence matters. An employment permit authorises the employment relationship under its conditions, but a visa-required Nigerian national must also follow the Irish long-stay visa process and obtain the appropriate immigration permission.

Keep the names of these documents separate in your plan. A recruiter who promises “the work visa” should be able to identify the employer, occupation, permit type and later immigration steps.

Employment permit routes

Critical Skills Employment Permit

This route targets employment that meets the current occupation, remuneration, contract and employer conditions. The Critical Skills Occupations List and thresholds are maintained officially and can change. A job title alone is not decisive; duties, qualifications and pay must align with the published rules.

General Employment Permit

The General permit covers a wider range of eligible employment but can involve a labour-market needs test and separate occupation restrictions. Check both the Ineligible List and any route-specific conditions before accepting an offer.

Other permits

Dependant/Partner/Spouse, intra-company transfer, contract-for-services, internship, sport and cultural, exchange and other permits exist for defined situations. Choose the permit that describes the real employment rather than the one with the most attractive name.

Before paying a recruiter, verify the Irish company, contact the employer independently and confirm who will submit the permit application. No third party can lawfully guarantee approval.

Treat study as an education decision first

Confirm that the programme and provider meet the immigration requirements for non-EEA students. Review tuition, academic progression, proof of finances, insurance, English evidence and the limits attached to the intended student permission.

Part-time work can help with experience but should not be the foundation of the funding plan. The Third Level Graduate Programme may allow eligible graduates of recognised Irish awards a period to seek graduate-level employment, but it remains time-limited and does not replace an employment permit where one is later required.

Ask the institution for the exact award, awarding body, refund policy and immigration-support process. Marketing terms such as “diploma pathway” are not enough.

Joining family depends on the sponsor

Irish citizens, EU/EEA citizens exercising relevant rights, international-protection beneficiaries and non-EEA permission holders do not all sponsor family under the same rules. The relationship, sponsor category, waiting period, finances and eligible relatives must be checked against the appropriate policy.

Prepare full civil-status records and a relationship timeline. Where a couple has lived apart, explain the practical reasons and show how the relationship continued. Do not submit private documents that the checklist does not require merely to make the file appear larger.

Entry, registration and permission stamps

A long-stay visa permits travel to seek entry; the immigration officer at the border makes the entry decision. After arrival, a non-EEA national staying beyond the applicable period normally needs to register and receive an Irish Residence Permit. The permission stamp records what the holder may do.

Read the stamp conditions before changing jobs, starting a business or enrolling in another course. A physical card’s expiry date does not excuse a breach of the underlying permission. Renew early enough to deal with appointment or document issues.

Build a long-term residence record

Not every permission counts in the same way toward long-term residence or citizenship. Keep copies of passports, entry stamps, Irish Residence Permits, employment permits, payslips, tax records, tenancy documents and travel dates. If a renewal is pending, retain proof that it was filed on time.

Before switching categories, check how the new permission affects family rights and any reckonable-residence calculation. For Nigeria-specific filing, use the Ireland visa application guide.

A realistic employment-permit scenario

Consider a Nigerian engineer offered a role by an Irish company. The useful first question is not whether engineers are generally needed, but whether the actual duties and salary fit a current permit, whether the employer is eligible, and whether the candidate’s qualification supports the role. The parties then decide who files the employment-permit application and assemble the contract and employer evidence.

Only after the permit stage is correctly mapped should the candidate complete the long-stay visa file. The visa evidence must remain consistent with the permit: same employer, role, remuneration and intended start. After entry, registration creates the immigration record and the issued stamp defines the working conditions. If the role changes before travel, both stages may need review.

This sequence also exposes fraudulent offers. A recruiter who cannot identify the permit category, refuses direct employer contact or asks the worker to invent experience is not solving an immigration problem; they are creating one.

Moving to Ireland from Nigeria FAQ

Is an Irish visa a Schengen visa?

No. Ireland operates its own visa system. An Irish visa does not generally authorise travel through the Schengen Area, and a Schengen visa does not authorise entry to Ireland.

Do I need both an employment permit and a visa?

A Nigerian national taking permit-based employment will normally need the correct employment permit and, because Nigeria is visa-required, the appropriate long-stay visa before travel. Registration follows after arrival.

Can I bring my family immediately on a work route?

It depends on the employment permit and sponsor conditions. Critical Skills and other categories can be treated differently. Check the current family-reunification policy for the exact sponsor status.

Can a student work full-time in Ireland?

Student work rights are limited by the permission and official academic-calendar rules. They are not an unrestricted full-time employment route.

Does Stamp 1 or Stamp 2 automatically count toward citizenship?

Reckonable residence is determined under Irish nationality rules and can treat permission types differently. Check the official residence calculator and preserve all registration records.

What should I verify in an Irish job offer?

Verify the employer, occupation, duties, salary, contract duration, permit eligibility and who is responsible for the application. Contact the employer independently of the recruiter.
