Confirm the category and prior approval
Run the official Visa for Italy questionnaire using nationality, country of residence, duration and purpose. Tourism, business, study, employed work, family reunification and self-employment require different evidence.
Employment and family cases may require a prior nulla osta issued through the appropriate process in Italy. University students may need institution and Universitaly pre-enrolment steps. A consular appointment cannot replace a missing authorisation.
Use the authorised submission channel
The Consulate General currently states that visa applications are submitted through TLScontact centres in Lagos or Abuja by appointment. Family reunification has a specified direct-consulate arrangement in Lagos through Prenot@Mi under the published instructions.
Begin from the consulate page because authorised providers, addresses and category exceptions can change. Do not book through a lookalike domain or purchase an appointment from someone outside the centre.
Build the document file
Prepare the application form, passport, photographs, purpose evidence, funds, accommodation, travel or health insurance and civil records required by the category. A work file connects the nulla osta, employer and contract; a student file connects pre-enrolment, admission, tuition, academic history and funding.
Follow current rules for legalising and translating Nigerian public documents. Names, dates and places must remain consistent across civil records and the passport. Correct material discrepancies lawfully rather than changing a translation.
Appointment and fraud controls
Attend with the required originals and copies. Be prepared to explain the purpose, sponsor or employer, funding and intended accommodation. The application centre collects the file; the Italian authority decides it.
Verify work authorisations through the real employer or authorised representative. A screenshot of a nulla osta or quota receipt is not enough when the company cannot be independently contacted. Never submit invented bank, employment or family records.
After the decision and arrival
Check the visa type, dates, entries and personal data. A national visa normally requires the holder to begin the applicable permesso di soggiorno process promptly after entry–commonly within eight working days for relevant categories.
Keep passport, visa, entry proof, accommodation and the post-office or Questura receipt. Complete tax-code, address, healthcare, work or enrolment formalities as applicable.
Do not assume that a pending residence-card appointment permits unrestricted travel through other countries. Check the official rules before leaving Italy while the first permit is being processed.
