The United Kingdom is not part of the EU or Schengen immigration systems. A German, French or other EU residence permit does not give a Nigerian citizen the right to live or work in the UK. Every UK plan must begin with a UK route and the current Immigration Rules.
UK categories are frequently updated. This guide avoids freezing changeable salary and financial figures into the article: verify them on GOV.UK on the day you prepare the application.
Four questions before choosing a visa
1. Who or what anchors the application?
A licensed employer anchors most sponsored work cases; a licensed educational sponsor anchors a Student application; a qualifying partner or relative anchors a family route. Global Talent and some business categories use different endorsements or achievements. If the supposed anchor cannot be verified, stop.
2. What activity will you actually perform?
A visitor cannot use a visit as a substitute for ordinary employment or residence. A sponsored worker must comply with the work conditions attached to the route. Describe the real purpose consistently across the form, evidence and travel history.
3. Is settlement part of the route?
Some categories can count toward indefinite leave to remain; others are temporary or use a different settlement calculation. Check this before investing several years and substantial fees.
4. Can the full household afford the process?
Calculate application fees, the immigration health surcharge where applicable, biometrics, tuberculosis testing, document costs, flights and initial housing. Dependants can multiply the budget.
Sponsored and unsponsored work routes
The Skilled Worker route normally requires an eligible job from a Home Office-licensed sponsor, a valid Certificate of Sponsorship, the required skill and salary position, and English-language evidence. Do not treat a Certificate of Sponsorship as a paper that can legitimately be purchased from a recruiter. Verify the employer in the official sponsor register and verify the vacancy with the employer through an independent contact channel.
Health and Care Worker applications use eligible occupations and employers within the relevant framework. Rules affecting care-worker dependants and sponsorship have changed in recent years, so a social-media checklist may be obsolete even when it once described a real route.
Other routes include Global Talent, Scale-up, High Potential Individual, Graduate, intra-company categories and temporary work schemes. Each answers a different policy purpose. “No job offer required” does not mean “no eligibility test” or “permanent status guaranteed”.
Student route and the post-study decision
A Student applicant needs an offer from a licensed sponsor and a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, plus the current financial, English and credibility evidence. Course level and sponsor determine work conditions. Dependants are restricted to defined student circumstances; confirm the current rule rather than relying on an older cohort’s experience.
The Graduate route may provide a time-limited period after eligible UK study, but it is not itself a promise of sponsorship or settlement. Before enrolling, compare tuition and living costs with realistic graduate employment, the occupations employers sponsor and the route available when Graduate permission ends.
Family applications require more than a certificate
A partner or spouse case can involve relationship evidence, sponsor status, finance, accommodation and English requirements. A marriage certificate proves a legal event but not every part of a genuine and subsisting relationship assessment. Organise evidence across the timeline without manufacturing messages, photographs or financial activity.
Routes for children, parents and adult dependent relatives use different and often narrower tests. Do not use the spouse checklist for another relative. Where a child’s parentage, custody or sole responsibility is disputed, obtain regulated advice early.
Run a cost and refusal-risk audit
| Risk area | Check before submission |
|---|---|
| Sponsor | Is the employer or institution currently licensed, and is the reference genuine? |
| Money | Does the route require maintenance funds for a specified period and account type? |
| English | Is the test, qualification or exemption accepted for this category? |
| History | Are earlier refusals, travel, names and addresses declared consistently? |
| Documents | Are translations and tuberculosis certificates compliant and still valid? |
| Dependants | Does the current route permit each relative to apply? |
Nigerian residents may need a tuberculosis test from a clinic approved for UK visa purposes when the applicable residence and stay conditions are met. Use the current GOV.UK clinic list. Do not submit a certificate from an unapproved provider.
After approval: eVisa, conditions and settlement records
The UK increasingly uses digital immigration status. Follow the decision instructions to access the eVisa, check the personal details and connect the current passport. Before travel, ensure the carrier-facing information is correct.
Keep payslips, employer letters, tax records, tenancy evidence, travel dates and previous decisions. Settlement depends on the exact route, qualifying residence and permitted absences. If employment, study or family circumstances change, check whether a new application is required before the current permission ends.

UK immigration from Nigeria FAQ
Can I move to the UK with a Schengen visa?
No. The UK has its own border and immigration rules. A Schengen visa does not authorise UK entry, residence or work.
How do I know whether a UK job offer is genuine?
Check the official register of licensed sponsors, contact the employer using independently verified details and never pay for a Certificate of Sponsorship. A sponsor licence alone does not authenticate a particular recruiter or vacancy.
Can every international student bring dependants?
No. The rules limit dependants to specified student circumstances. Verify the course, sponsor and current GOV.UK conditions before budgeting for a family application.
Does a five-year visa automatically produce settlement?
No. The route must lead to settlement and the applicant must satisfy its residence, absence, status and other requirements when applying.
Can I correct a mistake after submitting the form?
Some changes can be reported or explained, but the method depends on the stage and type of error. Do not submit false supporting evidence to hide it; seek regulated advice if the fact is material.
Should I use an immigration adviser?
Many applications can be prepared directly from GOV.UK. For refusals, deception allegations, complex family cases or settlement calculations, use an appropriately regulated UK immigration adviser or solicitor.
