Sweden Visa from Nigeria

Sweden visa guidance for Nigerian residents, with separate workflows for Schengen visits and work, study or family residence permits.

A short visit to Sweden and a move to Sweden are separate immigration projects. The first commonly uses a Schengen visa submitted under Sweden’s Nigeria instructions. The second normally begins with a residence-permit application to the Swedish Migration Agency. Treating them as one “Sweden visa” process leads to the wrong checklist.

Match the purpose to the permission

A Schengen visa supports a temporary tourism, family or business visit within its conditions. Paid work, a full degree or settling with a relative normally requires advance permission based on that activity. The duration alone does not turn an employment plan into a business visit.

For multi-country travel, show that Sweden is the main destination. For migration, identify the Migration Agency category and each dependency before applying: a qualifying job and employer process, admission and finances, or an eligible relationship and sponsor.

Apply for a temporary visit

Sweden Abroad’s Nigeria page publishes how to apply and identifies the authorised local intake route. Obtain the current purpose-specific checklist there. Typical evidence covers the form, passport, photograph, insurance, itinerary, accommodation, funding and personal or professional circumstances in Nigeria.

Make the dates consistent across the invitation, leave approval, insurance and bookings. If a host pays, show what the host covers and how the parties know each other. An invitation is supporting evidence, not automatic approval. The applicant must still present a credible and lawful visit.

Apply within the permitted Schengen window and allow for appointment availability and further examination. Avoid non-refundable travel before the result. A provider’s optional premium service cannot make an inadmissible or poorly evidenced application eligible.

Apply to work, study or join family

Residence applications are normally made through the Swedish Migration Agency. In many work cases, the employer begins the process and the applicant receives a link to complete personal information and attach evidence. Salary, insurance and employment terms must meet the current route rules.

Students need eligible full-time admission and must satisfy tuition, maintenance and insurance requirements that apply to them. Family cases examine the relationship, identities, sponsor status, accommodation and maintenance rules where applicable. Use the category page for the current evidence rather than copying another applicant’s file.

Do not travel as a visitor intending to bypass a rule that says the residence permit must be granted before entry. Limited in-country exceptions do not create a general conversion right.

Passport checks and biometrics

The Migration Agency or Sweden Abroad instructions explain when a passport check, interview, photograph or fingerprints are required and where the applicant must attend. The arrangement for Nigeria can differ by case type and can change, so rely on the instruction issued for the individual application.

Bring originals and accurate civil records. If an online passport check is offered to an eligible applicant, follow the secure official invitation; do not upload identity documents to a link sent by an unverified agent. A residence-permit card may require biometrics before it can be produced.

Avoid preventable refusals and fraud

Verify an employer through independent company information and direct corporate contact. No recruiter can sell a Migration Agency decision. A genuine job application should identify the employer, role, location, salary, working hours and contractual terms.

For every route, disclose earlier refusals and explain material discrepancies. Use certified translations where instructed. Do not alter a bank statement or civil record to make it resemble a checklist example. False material can undermine both the current case and credibility later.

Read the decision before travelling

For a visit visa, check the dates, entries and permitted duration and carry supporting evidence to the border. For residence, read the approval and card instructions before booking travel. Confirm when work or study may begin and whether any local registration is needed.

If refused, the notice identifies the reasoning and any appeal process and deadline. Focus on the legal finding rather than immediately filing the same documents again. The European work visa guide gives a broader overview of long-term employment routes.

Sweden visa FAQ

Is a Swedish visit visa a work permit?

No. It permits the authorised short visit; ordinary employment requires the appropriate work and residence permission.

Where do Nigerians find the current appointment route?

Use Sweden Abroad’s Nigeria “How to apply” page and the authorised provider or mission link published there.

Who decides a Swedish residence application?

The Swedish Migration Agency decides it. A mission may conduct checks, interviews or biometrics but does not sell approvals.

Can I enter as a visitor and change to a work permit?

Do not assume so. The normal rule may require applying and receiving permission before entry; only rely on an exception confirmed for the exact circumstances.

Does an invitation guarantee a Swedish visa?

No. It supports the stated purpose, but the authority assesses the whole application and whether the legal requirements are met.
