Every substantive guide should identify the real person responsible for the work. A name and biography allow readers to judge whether the author or expert has relevant experience and whether any conflict has been disclosed.

Do not publish generic identities, stock portraits or invented credentials. If a contributor uses a professional pen name for a legitimate safety reason, the editor should verify the person privately and explain the policy without fabricating a public biography.

What an author profile must show
A useful profile explains the contributor’s role, subject areas, relevant education or professional experience and the limits of their expertise. It should distinguish practical editorial experience from legal qualification.

- current editorial role and areas covered;
- relevant, verifiable qualifications and registrations;
- experience that helps the person report accurately;
- links to recent articles and, where appropriate, external professional records;
- material conflicts or commercial relationships.
When expert review is used
Expert review is appropriate where legal interpretation, medical information, regulated professional practice or a technically complex procedure materially affects the reader. The reviewer should be competent in the relevant subject and jurisdiction.
A “reviewed by” label is added only after a named person has checked the actual article. A title, logo or automated grammar check is not expert review. The record should identify the reviewer, and material later changes may require another review.
Review does not transfer all responsibility away from the writer or editor. It adds a documented layer of scrutiny for claims within the reviewer’s scope.
Bylines, dates and responsibility
Each substantial article should show an author and expert reviewer where applicable. The byline links to a profile so readers can see the person’s background and other work. Publication and material-update information are maintained separately from the reviewer label.
An update date should reflect a meaningful content review, not a cosmetic edit made to appear fresh. The editor records important sources and changes under the fact-checking policy.
Conflicts and commercial work
Contributors must disclose employment, consulting, investment, referral, family or other interests connected with a topic or reviewed provider. The managing editor decides whether to disclose the interest, add independent review or assign the work elsewhere.
A person who prepares paid promotional material for a company should not independently score that company without a clearly managed and disclosed process. Editorial conclusions cannot be sold.
Corrections and accountability
An author is expected to cooperate when credible new evidence challenges an article. The editor assesses the source, documents the decision and adds a material correction note when appropriate.
