Relocation Nigeria guide

Immigrate to Germany from Nigeria

A route-first guide for Nigerians moving to Germany for skilled work, the Opportunity Card, study, training or family life.

Important: This guide is general information, not legal advice or a guarantee of approval. Your nationality, residence history, family circumstances and chosen route may change the requirements.

Germany offers several routes that can look similar from a distance but solve different problems. A professional with a qualifying job offer may compare the skilled-worker permit and EU Blue Card. Someone who is still looking for work may investigate the Opportunity Card. A student, vocational trainee or family member follows a separate legal path.

The practical question is not “How do I relocate to Germany?” It is “Which residence title matches my purpose, qualifications and evidence?” This guide helps Nigerian applicants answer that question before paying for translations, recognition or an appointment.

Choose a route by starting position

You have a German job offer. Identify whether the role and your qualification support a skilled-worker residence title, EU Blue Card or another employment category. The contract, salary, qualification and–where relevant–Federal Employment Agency approval are assessed against the chosen route.

You have a qualification but no job offer. The Opportunity Card may permit a time-limited job search if its qualification, language, points and funding rules are met. It is not guaranteed employment and should be assessed against the cost of living and the occupations realistically open to you.

You need German recognition or adaptation. Some applicants use a route connected to recognition measures rather than pretending recognition is already complete. The official Recognition in Germany tool identifies the competent body and whether the occupation is regulated.

You have admission or a training place. University study and vocational training have different funding, language and documentation requirements. An admission letter does not automatically satisfy the visa conditions.

You are joining family. The sponsor’s status, relationship, housing and other conditions determine the family route. EU Blue Card and skilled-worker families may benefit from particular rules, but the official family guidance must be checked for the exact sponsor.

Check qualification recognition before building the application

Recognition is not a single certificate required for every job. In regulated professions–such as many healthcare, teaching and legal roles–a licence or formal recognition is central to practising. In non-regulated work, the immigration route may instead require proof that a foreign academic or vocational qualification is comparable or recognised.

Use the official recognition tools to answer three separate questions:

  • Is the occupation regulated in Germany?
  • Which authority assesses this qualification?
  • Does the immigration route require full recognition, comparability or evidence that recognition is in progress?

Allow time for transcripts, course descriptions, professional licences and verification from Nigerian institutions. Names and dates must match the passport. A recognition decision can take longer than the visa preparation, so it belongs near the beginning of the project.

Compare the main work options

EU Blue Card

The EU Blue Card is for qualifying employment supported by an accepted higher-education or comparable tertiary qualification and a salary meeting the current threshold. Germany publishes a general threshold and a lower threshold for specified shortage occupations and qualifying new labour-market entrants. These figures change, so use the official page for the year of application.

The current framework also provides a route for some experienced IT specialists without a traditional degree. This is a defined exception with evidence requirements, not a general waiver for all occupations.

Work visa for qualified professionals

A skilled-worker permit may fit a recognised vocational or academic qualification and qualified employment even when the Blue Card conditions are not met. Confirm whether the job is considered qualified and whether any regulated-profession licence is required.

Opportunity Card

The Opportunity Card is a job-search route. Some applicants qualify through a recognised qualification; others are assessed through a points route involving factors such as qualifications, language, experience and age. Proof of sufficient funds remains important. Compare the likely search period with housing, insurance and travel costs before choosing it over employer-led recruitment from Nigeria.

Experienced workers and special categories

Germany also has provisions for certain workers with professional experience, researchers, intra-corporate transfers, self-employment and other profiles. Use the official visa navigator rather than forcing every case into the Blue Card.

Study and vocational training are different projects

A university student needs recognised admission, funding and the evidence specified for the study route. A vocational trainee usually needs a qualifying training agreement and sufficient German for the programme. Both applicants should examine work limits, insurance, accommodation and the options available after successful completion.

Do not choose a private course solely because it is advertised as a migration route. Confirm that the institution and programme support the intended visa and residence outcome.

Application sequence from Nigeria

  1. Use Make it in Germany and the Federal Foreign Office visa navigator to identify the legal route.
  2. Complete recognition, comparability or professional-licensing steps where required.
  3. Secure the route-specific anchor: employment contract, admission, training place or family evidence.
  4. Prepare proof of funds, insurance, civil records, qualifications and translations from the official checklist.
  5. Check the German missions in Nigeria and Consular Services Portal for the current filing channel.
  6. Submit truthful, consistent forms and retain a complete copy of the application.
  7. Wait for the visa decision before making commitments the checklist does not require.

The first weeks after arrival

Address registration, health insurance, tax registration, bank access and the residence-title process can interact. Follow the instructions of the local foreigners authority and employer or institution. Keep the entry visa, registration certificate, employment or enrolment evidence and every authority letter.

If employment changes, check the residence conditions before starting the new role. Blue Card holders changing jobs during the first employment year must notify the foreigners authority under the current official guidance. Longer-term plans should also account for language and pension-contribution conditions attached to settlement routes.

Immigrating to Germany: frequently asked questions

Do I need German to obtain a work visa?

Language requirements depend on the route and occupation. A visa may not always prescribe German, but regulated professions, employers and daily life can require it. The Opportunity Card and training routes have their own language rules.

Is the Opportunity Card better than finding a job from Nigeria?

Not automatically. It provides job-search access for qualifying applicants but requires funding and does not guarantee employment. An employer-led route can be financially safer when a credible offer is available.

Can I use an EU Blue Card salary figure from last year?

No. Germany updates Blue Card thresholds. Check the official figure for the intended start date and whether the role falls within a lower-threshold category.

Does Anabin replace professional recognition?

Not in every case. Academic comparability and permission to practise a regulated profession are different questions. Use the authority responsible for the occupation.

Can my family accompany me?

Many work, study and training statuses support family reunification, but eligible relatives, timing and evidence depend on the sponsor’s title. Check the route-specific family rules.

Does a German work permit lead to permanent residence?

Several skilled routes can lead to a settlement permit if their residence, employment, language and contribution conditions are met. The timetable differs by title and personal circumstances.
