Spanish visa requirements depend on the length and purpose of travel. A Schengen visit, study programme, employment contract, international telework plan and family move must be filed under the correct category and through the Spanish post responsible for the applicant.
Choose Schengen or national processing
A short visit within the Schengen limit uses the applicable short-stay procedure. Residence, employment, long study, remote work and other stays exceeding 90 days generally use a national visa or prior residence authorisation.
Use the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs category page and the competent post’s Nigeria instructions. Do not assume that a short-stay appointment accepts a national-visa file.
Check whether Spain must approve first
Many employee and family-reunification cases begin with an employer or sponsor obtaining authorisation in Spain. The consular visa stage follows the favourable decision. Other routes–such as study, non-working residence or international telework–can begin through the category-specific consular process, subject to current law.
Read the approval’s validity and filing deadline. An expired authorisation or changed employer may require action in Spain before a visa can be issued.
Confirm consular jurisdiction
Spain’s Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos publish services by visa type and territorial responsibility. The applicant should use the post indicated for legal residence and category, then follow its authorised appointment link.
Instructions can differ by post. A checklist from London, New York or another country does not establish how a Nigerian resident books or submits.
Prepare documents in the right order
National visa files commonly require the application form, passport, photographs, prior authorisation or route anchor, proof of funds, compliant health insurance, police certificate, medical certificate and civil records as applicable.
Public documents may require legalisation or apostille and sworn Spanish translation. Check validity periods before ordering police and medical certificates. The finance calculation for non-working or telework residence depends on current official indicators and family size.
Use a one-page index. Keep originals and copies as instructed, and ensure names and dates match. A cover explanation is useful for a genuine discrepancy but cannot replace the underlying required record.
Visa decision and TIE stage
After approval, verify category, validity and entries. Many residents staying beyond the applicable period must enter Spain and apply for the Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero within the route’s deadline. Address registration and social-security or employment steps may also apply.
A visa refusal should state reasons and challenge options. Note the deadline immediately; the correct response depends on whether the problem is legal eligibility, missing evidence or an error of fact.

Spain visa application FAQ
Do all Spanish applications begin at the consulate?
No. Employment and some family routes require prior authorisation in Spain. Other categories begin with a direct consular application.
Can I submit at any Spanish post in Nigeria?
No. Use the Embassy or Consulate responsible for the visa category and applicant’s jurisdiction.
Are English Nigerian documents automatically accepted?
Follow the category checklist. Public documents may require legalisation and sworn Spanish translation even when originally in English.
What is the TIE?
It is the foreigner identity card obtained in Spain by qualifying residents after entry or approval.
Can an appointment seller accelerate the decision?
No. Book through the official post or authorised channel. A private seller cannot lawfully control consular assessment.
