Malta Visa from Nigeria

How Nigerian residents plan a Malta short-stay visa or long-stay route without confusing the application centre with the deciding authority.

Important: This guide is general information, not legal advice or a guarantee of approval. Your nationality, residence history, family circumstances and chosen route may change the requirements.

A Malta visa application from Nigeria changes according to the proposed stay. A Schengen visa supports a genuine temporary visit; moving for a job, education or family life requires the relevant Maltese long-stay and residence process. Start with the legal purpose, then use the submission channel currently identified by Malta’s authorities.

Define the stay before booking

Write down the intended activity, duration, host or employer and who will pay. Tourism, visiting a relative, attending a business event, taking employment and studying are not interchangeable labels. The application form, bookings, bank activity and supporting letters should all tell the same truthful story.

For a trip involving several Schengen states, Malta should normally handle the visa only when it is the main destination. Where the stays are equal, the first-entry rule can become relevant. A cheap flight through Malta does not by itself make Malta the competent state.

Prepare a credible short visit

The current checklist for the selected purpose governs the file. A visitor commonly needs a valid passport, form, photographs, compliant travel medical insurance, accommodation, itinerary, evidence of funds and ties to Nigeria. A host or sponsor may need to provide additional identity, address and financial material.

Use reservations that can be checked and dates that match. A sponsor does not eliminate the need to explain the applicant’s circumstances, and a bank balance alone does not prove the source or availability of funds. Keep documents proportionate and add a short explanation only where a real inconsistency needs context.

Complete long-stay dependencies

Employment normally involves an employer and the correct Maltese work or residence authorisation. Students need an eligible course and institution evidence. Family cases depend on the sponsor’s Maltese status and the legally recognised relationship. These permissions may involve Identità and other Maltese authorities before or after visa submission.

Do not pay a recruiter for a “Malta work visa” without a verifiable employer, contract, salary, occupation and case reference. Confirm the employer independently and identify which government process is actually being used. A visa sticker, work authorisation and residence card are different documents with different functions.

Verify the Nigerian submission route

Identità’s Central Visa Unit publishes official visa information and FAQs. It may use an external application provider for local intake. Because provider arrangements, appointment locations and categories can change, follow the link from the Maltese authority rather than a saved advertisement or an agent’s message.

The application centre checks the file, collects fees and biometrics and forwards the case. It cannot guarantee approval. Attend personally when required, retain the receipt and protect login credentials. Optional lounge, courier or document-scanning services concern convenience, not eligibility.

Calculate cost and time

Separate the visa fee from the provider’s service charge, insurance, translations, legalisation, document delivery and travel. Long-stay cases may also involve residence or work-permit charges. Check official prices in their stated currency and the authorised Nigerian payment method before transferring funds.

A Schengen application can generally be lodged up to six months before travel. The standard decision period is not an appointment promise and can be extended for examination or missing material. Long-stay timing depends on the underlying route. Avoid non-refundable travel and resignation decisions until the necessary permission has actually been granted.

Use the decision correctly

On approval, examine the visa’s name, dates, entries and duration. Carry evidence of purpose, accommodation, funds and onward plans because border officers can ask for it. A short-stay visa does not permit the holder to begin ordinary employment or remain beyond its conditions.

For a long stay, complete every post-arrival registration, biometrics, residence-card and employer step within the stated time. If the application is refused, use the written notice to understand review rights and correct the actual weakness before paying again. The Schengen visa guide for Nigeria explains the shared short-stay rules in more detail.

Malta visa FAQ

Is Malta part of the Schengen Area?

Yes. Its short-stay visa follows Schengen rules, while long-stay and residence permissions remain Maltese national processes.

Can I use a Malta visit visa to take a job?

A visit visa is not a substitute for the required employment and residence authorisation. Complete the work route before starting work.

Where should I book from Nigeria?

Use the provider and appointment instructions linked by Malta’s Central Visa Unit or another competent Maltese government page at the time of applying.

Does a paid application-centre upgrade improve the decision?

No. Optional services may make submission more convenient but do not change the legal assessment.

Should I buy a confirmed flight first?

Avoid unnecessary non-refundable commitments. Follow the checklist’s itinerary requirement and book travel only with a clear understanding of the risk.
