A residence permit is evidence of a legal status; it is not the status itself. Its plastic card or digital record may look similar across countries, while the conditions behind it differ sharply. The decision letter and legal category tell you what you may do, when you must renew and whether time in that category supports a longer-term application.
The process may have two parts
For a first move from Nigeria, the country may require a long-stay entry visa before travel and a residence registration or permit after arrival. In other systems, the residence application is decided before travel and the physical card is collected later. Follow the sequence for the exact route: an approval, entry sticker and residence card may each serve a different function.
Do not book non-refundable travel simply because an employer, university or family sponsor has completed its part. Their approval may be a prerequisite rather than the final immigration decision.

Read the conditions, not only the expiry date
When a permit is issued, check the spelling of your names, date of birth, permit category, work restrictions and validity. Compare the card with the written decision. Ask the authority promptly about errors.
| Field or condition | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Legal category | Controls the purpose, renewal test and often the route to settlement. |
| Employer or occupation restriction | A new job may require notification or approval before it begins. |
| Validity dates | Late renewal can interrupt lawful residence or working rights. |
| Remarks | May record access to employment, study or public benefits. |
| Passport link | A passport change may require an update or replacement card. |
Life events can affect a permit
A move of address, employer change, course withdrawal, divorce, extended absence, new passport or criminal charge may need to be reported. Reporting does not always mean the status will end; failing to report can create a separate problem. Use the competent authority’s current form and keep proof of submission.
If employment ends, check immediately whether there is a grace period, a job-search option or a different status for which you can apply. Do not wait until the permit expiry date if the legal basis has already changed.
Build the renewal file throughout the year
Renewal evidence is easier to collect monthly than in the final week. Keep:
- the original decision, card and application copy;
- employment contracts, payslips, tax and social-security records;
- enrolment and progress evidence for study routes;
- insurance and address records;
- civil-status evidence relevant to a family route;
- a travel log showing entry, exit and longer absences;
- receipts and confirmation for every notification to the authority.
Begin checking renewal instructions well before expiry. An appointment may be scarce, and a document that was accepted last year may have a new format or validity period.
Common avoidable risks
Typical problems include working outside the authorised conditions, relying on an expired passport, missing a renewal window, submitting inconsistent civil records or assuming that a pending application automatically permits travel. Another risk is confusing lawful stay with continuous residence: long absences may be permitted for the current card but still damage eligibility for permanent residence.
If the authority intends to refuse, withdraw or not renew status, note the appeal deadline immediately. Deadlines can be short, and professional advice is most useful before it expires.
European residence permit FAQ
Can I travel while my first residence card is pending?
Only if the documents you hold permit exit and re-entry. A filing receipt is not universally a travel document. Confirm with the issuing authority before leaving.
May I start work as soon as I arrive?
That depends on the visa, approval and permit conditions. Some routes authorise work immediately; others require registration or card collection first.
Can my residence permit be cancelled before its printed expiry?
Yes. A status may be withdrawn if its legal basis ends, conditions are breached or it was obtained using false information. Procedural and appeal rights depend on national law.
What if I lose the card?
Report the loss through the required police or immigration channel, request replacement evidence and check travel restrictions. Keep a secure copy of both sides to help identify the document.
Does a residence permit guarantee permanent residence later?
No. You must meet the later status’s residence, absence, income, language and other conditions. Some temporary categories are treated differently in that calculation.
